What is a chiropractic adjustment?

Chiropractic treatments consist of gentle manipulation techniques known as chiropractic adjustments to restore function, mobility and balance to joints. During an adjustment, the pressure within the joint space changes and sometimes patients report a ‘clicking’ noise. This is the sound of air being released from within a joint and is not normally painful.

The audible ‘clicking’ noise doesn’t need to occur for a successful adjustment, though it often does. Some patients and chiropractors like to hear a click. Research has found that click or no click, the same benefits are experienced. By repeating the adjustment to get a click a joint can actually become damaged.

The mechanism of why adjustments work is not completely understood. The most recent research suggest a more complex reason for the therapeutic effects of chiropractic adjustments:

  • Proprioceptive stimulation triggers the release of endorphins
  • Improved nutrient supply
  • Reduced tension on nerve tissue
  • Proprioceptive training

There are several methods used to perform chiropractic adjustments. At The City of London Chiropractor Clinic we will always use gentle techniques to produce the required improvements and benefits.
